Dr. Mel Fugate is a management professor whose professional life is comprised of four dimensions: research, teaching, textbook writing, and consulting. His major research streams are:

  • Employee reactions to organizational change

  • Employee cognitions and emotions

  • Leadership and organizational culture

  • Leading change

  • Leadership and emotions

  • Employability and careers

 

Many of the same phenomena he studies are also the focus of his consulting, and his clients often participate in his research. Among his specialties:

  • Leading and managing change

  • Ethical leadership and organizational cultures

  • Culture change

  • Leading strategically using purpose, vision, and values

  • Performance management

  • High performance and agile cultures

  • Organizational strategy

  • Exceptional client/patient service (building trust, loyalty, and share of wallet)

 

Most generally his research and consulting aim to improve individual and organizational performance by utilizing practical, research-based tools to understand, measure, and motivate change.

 

Prof. Fugate is also an award-winning teacher whose interests span many topics: organizational behavior, leadership, management, ethics and leadership, strategic human capital, organizational culture, leading and managing change, and performance management.

 

His teaching experience includes online and crosses all levels—executives, MBAs, masters, and undergraduates. He has taught in the United States, France, and Australia:

  • Kogod School of Business at American University (Washington, DC)

  • Center for Workplace Excellence at the University of South Australia (Adelaide, South Australia)

  • Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University (Dallas, USA)

  • EM Lyon Business School (Lyon, France)

  • A. B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University (New Orleans, USA)

  • W. P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University (Tempe, USA)

 

He completed his PhD in management with an emphasis in organizational behavior at Arizona State University. Before pursuing a PhD, Dr. Fugate received a BS in Engineering and Business Administration from Michigan State University, and his previous professional lives included work as a consultant and positions in health care and the pharmaceutical industry.
